About us

Urban Winery SydneyMake, taste and eat

The city’s first true urban winery and the city heart of the A.Retief wine label.
Urban Winery Sydney is located in Precinct 75 in St Peters and includes a full functioning open winery, a cellar door, an event space and wine bar.

It’s a meeting place where epicurious visitors can discover and enjoy wine via blending masterclasses, tours, tutored tastings, long lunches and private events.

A.Retief WinesThe Wines

Founded in 2008, winemaker Alex Retief sources grapes from cool-climate regions of NSW including the family’s biodynamic vineyard in Gundagai for his award-winning wines.

The wines are handcrafted by Alex in Sydney, and showcase his philosophy of expressing the vineyard and region’s characteristics and exploring blends and varietals.

Cellar Door, Bar & Events

Cellar Door & Tasting Bar

Showcasing the A.Retief wine range and celebrating NSW producer regionality, our cellar door and wine bar is the ultimate place to try our wines by the glass, bottle or buy them to take home.

Taste our wines handcrafted on-site and sample a selection of charcuterie and cheese plates from the state’s best producers including Alto Olives, Salumi Australia, Challenger Smallgoods and Spiess, as well seasonal specials.

Pull up a stool, or settle into an armchair amid racks of barrels, the wine press and tanks, and learn as little or as much about the wine as you’d like from our passionate staff.

Starting Saturday, February 11, Ralston Bros’ Oysters Unplugged will be shucking to order between 4pm and 8pm until the end of summer. Other regular offerings include yoga classes every Tuesday night from 7pm-8pm, or one of our monthly producer evenings or a chef & winemaker lunch on the last Sunday of each month.

Sunday Harvest Lunches
Each Sunday in March, we’re holding a harvest “workers” lunch from 12pm to 3pm.
Yes, it’s definitely more Bordeaux-style than Wagga Wagga, but there’s nothing wrong with that.
Stomp and plunge, then settle in for a casual shared long-table lunch of wine, cured meats, pate and cheeses. Tickets are $75pp.

Chef and Winemaker long table lunch – 1pm-5pm $110pp
Studio Neon is run by chef Aaron Teece. His philosophy is simple: bring like-minded people together in an inspired yet relaxed setting, to share food, wine and to create a memorable experience. So much similarity with us at Urban Winery Sydney! Guests will sit at the winery’s communal long table among the barrels and listen to the chef and winemaker share their approach to matching food and wine.

Cellar door & Tasting Bar opening hours:
  • Closed Mondays and all public holidays
  • Tuesday-Friday 5pm-9pm
  • Saturday 12pm-9pm
  • Sunday 12pm-5pm

Private Events & Experiences

At Urban Winery Sydney, our doors are always open for you to discover our wine and winemaking. If you’d like a more in-depth experience we offer a range of experiences.

Try our two-hour, blend-your-own wine masterclasses – an opportunity to beat the winemaker at his own craft and create the perfect blend, learning about the craft of winemaking along the way. Then there’s the opportunity to bottle and buy a dozen of your finest, with a personalised label. Blend-your-own masterclass $150pp.

Or want to learn the real art of assessing and tasting wine? Book in for our two-hour wine tasting masterclass, which starts with a winery tour before tasting six A.Retief wines based on judging principles of colour and clarity, aroma and palate. Tasting masterclass $150pp

The winery is available for private hire for weddings, birthdays and corporate events. Or book in for a group tasting. Call 02 9565 5771 or email enquiries@urbanwinerysydney.com.au
